A Library in the East Village

This project develops an approach to community engagement that combines a spatial intervention with an institutional initiative to strengthen the connection between affordable housing and neighborhood. The primary gesture of our intervention incorporates an outpost of the New York Public Library system.

Focused on the relationship between policy and the built environment, the request for proposal asked for the addition of five floors to an affordable housing project in lower Manhattan. By tapping into the library system, this intervention will offer public programs such as English classes, citizenship test preparation, and an artbook and art supply library that provide opportunity to the East Village’s residents.
